About The Artwork
INSPIRED BY expressing a desire to integrate humankind and nature, I have combined, overlapped, intertwined and hidden, one behind the other, images of humans and animals In Masquerade, a fox disguised as a male human, dances with a female human who has dressed herself as a rabbit, complete with big ears and tail. While the fox engages the viewer with his knowing and mischievous gaze (making the viewer complicit,) the handsome "male" engages with the pretty, playful rabbit–who is really a woman. Even the time frame of the painting is in on the mischief, because it is simultaneously day (right side of canvas) and night (left). In the night part of the painting, there is a masquerade going on as well. A man sitting on the moon holds a mask over the orb and the stars have arranged themselves as people, giving us constellations masquerading in costumes. My INSPIRATION for this portion of the painting is the amazing fact that human beings are made up entirely of stardust. Here, paradoxically, the constellations are made up of humans: I hope VIEWERS WILL FEEL A KINSHIP with nature and the universe and realize the importance of living harmoniously with our surroundings. The realistic STYLE I chose is necessary to convey the narrative happening in the painting while the versatility of acrylic pigments let me layer canvas and render the multiple images with ease.` The painting will arrive ready to hang. All four sides have been painted as a continuation of the paint on the front.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
