My childhood travels with my father often involved little jaunts to Mexico in winter. One year, we stopped into see a Goya exhibition in Mexico city. I was fascinated by his Majas... they left a big impression on me and over the years I've enjoyed meeting other artists' version of the reclining female form. Being female myself it's perhaps also a curiosity about the female form under the male gaze that so often sparked my interest. My Maja, if I can call her this, is comfortable in her skin, relaxed and free, curious and seemingly optimistic I like the suggestion of the male form in the background to the left... as if she's waiting for her lover. According to www.artlovingitaly.com, 'the term “Maja” is a Spanish word that refers to the smartly dressed female commoners on Madrid's streets. The fashions they wore were similar to today's punk rockers. They were considered very faddish and outrageous.' As an ex-punk myself (a very brief interlude in my teens), it made me laugh to think perhaps my Maja is also a bit of a punk rocker... with her hair down!

Visual and mixed media artist. I returned to painting after a long gap, after suffering a stroke a few years back. What started as art as therapy has become daily, joyful creative play inspired by colour and light, The interplay between words and images intrigues me and I'm fascinated by women - their emotions, connection with nature, relationships with themselves and other women. I'm currently working on a series called 'The women' which celebrates sisterhood. I also explore abstract floral and landscape art. Seeking beauty and sparking joy as part of my personal well-being journey. As Matisse once said, 'There are always flowers for those who want to see them.' Originally from the blueberry laden Atlantic shores of Canada, I now live in Sardinia with my husband (the poet farmer) and Violetta (the cat muse).
