About The Artwork

This work was inspired by the water tower in Lucerne, Switzerland. It follows in the tradition of the pointillist painters of the 19th century but with a modern twist. Close-up, it appears as an almost random collection of coloured squares. Its lack of symmetry seems devoid of structure. As a mosaic, it uses a reduced pallet of blues, greys, purples, greens, black and white. Each square is about 1.5cm. Yet as you walk back from the painting, the image appears. It is a tower, reflected in a lake within an alpine setting. This is one of those rare paintings where, from a distance, your mind fills in the gaps to imagine almost photographic realism: the tower in context. To an extent, this is two paintings in one. First it is a mosaic or pixellated image. Second, and from a distance, is is a clear image of the tower reflected in the lake. This is "optical mixing" as opposed to physical mixing of colours.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I'm based in London, UK and paint both representational and abstract art. I take inspiration from modern masters and use only the highest quality hand made oil paints. My work is usually for private clients. An American art collector once said: "If I can understand a painting in thirty seconds, I'm not interested." I seek to address this idea, creating paintings that are a provocation for questions and discussion that "never reaches the bottom" - a phrase once attributed to Velasquez' "Las Meninas." Painting in oils on canvas enables my work to use both physical and optical colour mixing, three-dimensional surface textures and layering. I use brushes, pallet knives and pre-cut shapes to apply paint.
