About The Artwork

This idea originated as a landscape painting of a ridge near my house, on a windy spring day, with the tumbling clouds that follow a storm as a dramatic backdrop. I liked the original idea and wanted to add more to the meaning. A child running across the ridge seemed like a nice, romantic notion. A long, long string to a kite high in the sky emphasized that idea. I was after a deeper and more provocative thought space for the image and I'd had an idea that I'd sketched out years before of a shrine on a rock, inspired by a quizzical monument up in the mountains. The rock and the shrine add a layer of symbolic meaning that I hope will inspire some thought and reflection. The final addition is a door in the shrine. The door is a door to the unknown and the shrine is a symbol of our need for monuments and religious constructions that constrain us and chain us into darker places of meaning. The girl, the ridge, the clouds and the kite are all symbols of the desire to play in opposition to the oppressive symbols. The girl in the title, Leela, is the goddess of play in ancient Vedic cosmology.
