Acrylic on card. This painting is part of the series Under Pressure, created during the summer 2020 Covid-19 lockdown. The scene is intimate, depicting a couple seated closely to one another, perhaps expressing the artist's yearning for physical closeness and intimacy during the period of self-isolation. As with some of the other works in the series, the human form is here created via bold brush strokes of black that seem to have been executed spontaneously, whilst the palette consists of earthy shades of terracotta and red clay, suggesting the artist's desire to return to a state of being in the natural world.

Nabil Abou Hamad is a British-Lebanese visual artist primarily active as a painter in oil, acrylic and mixed media. He is one of the last surviving members of the 1960s "Artists of the Horseshoe" circle—a gathering of visual artists who frequented the Horseshoe café in Beirut's Hamra street during the city's heyday as the Middle East's hub of free expression, liberal lifestyles and intellectualism. Still active and prolific in output, Nabil's œuvre to date spans six decades of work, fluctuating between periods of experimentation in styles that range from the fauvist, to the primitivist, to the abstract expressionist and their hybrids.
