About The Artwork
I created this on an old, rough, damaged scrap of discarded lumber. I left the wood as I found it -- cracked, gnarled, and faded. The colored bands are acrylic ground I painted in an interrupted stripe around the wood block. There are multiple small oil paintings which suggest individual fragments of time, like an abstract comic book. Each tiny painting functions as a "window," or a glimpse into my mind or another world. The imagery is vaguely landscape: Sky, moon, sun, earth, pitch black night, sunlight, a cross-section of earth. The forms also echo the shapes present in the wood grain of the wood block itself.

I create compartmentalized oil paintings on surfaces such as discarded wood scraps, prepared paper, or canvas. The paintings are what I call "mental landscapes" -- both evoking nature and an internal abstract world. I think of each compartment as a window -- a small glimpse of something bigger beyond the visible. The rows of painted segments represent time lapses, and may function sequentially like an abstract comic book. The segments often wrap around the surface, terminate unexpectedly and disappear. My studio is located on the dynamic Space Coast of Florida. I'm currently Professor of Art at Eastern Florida State College, where I teach Drawing, Painting, and Design.
