In the Countryside Painting

This is the first painting of a small series I realized onto particleboard. Here the support plays a double role. As usual, it is the physical foundation of my work. At the same time, it is also an integral part of the finished artpiece. Some months ago, I was doing some shopping in a DIY shop when I saw some of these boards, and I suddenly decided to use them in an artistic way. I liked the idea of leaving the chipboard as it was, in order to clearly perceive its wooden, unitary but at the same time heterogeneous nature. In my opinion, in fact, the pattern of particleboard conveys a sense of naturalness. As soon as I looked at this piece of wood, countryside came to my mind. The wood of course, but also the bales of hay that my great-uncle stored nearby my swing. I immediately remembered the smell of the hay, its color, and the bales that where at the same time compact yet composed of many threads, just like my current support that is made up of many wooden parts. The image that was supposed to “surface” out of a similar support, had to be a simple and rustic one. A peacock was the perfect subject, because it is both a barnyard animal, and a very elegant and beautiful creature. There are also some daisies, which are very common and simple flowers that blossom everywhere in the countryside. The bottom of this painting is occupied by a stylized tile. My inspiration for it was another childhood memory, namely the engraved concrete tiles that covered the floor of the space in front of my grandparents' house. The way of painting I chose for this work is – so to speak – a light one. In fact, the paint lies onto the irregular support without trying to completely cover it, or to infiltrate the cracks in order to hide them. Rather, the painting follows the fibers of the wood, and brings out this latter’s irregular surface. Framed with wood batons – no additional framing required. Ready to hang.
