I met this girl once. Acrylic on Framed Canvas 12" X 9" I met her looking at me from afar while I picked at a bland, much too large lunch. It was a fancy place in Italy. Lots of pizzazz but little quality. I continued reading some bad magazine I had wasted good money on. But you know when you are being watched and, looking up, I saw she was just beyond the perimeter of the café. Seemingly nonchalantly making herself invisible behind an ornamental bush. Fixing my eyes she nodded at the unappreciated food. Only then I noticed that what she wore was less than fashionable, dirty around cuffs and hems. The fingernails were cracked and broken. And yet her beautiful soulful eyes were so beautiful it burnt an image in me that belied her present circumstances. She suddenly hurried off when the waiter took an instant dislike at her being so close to the clients. “Cameriere!” I called out and asked for a ‘Doggy Bag’ and a chocolate Milkshake to go and dropped a few coins for a tip. Outside the Café, looking around and not see anyone, I lit a cigarette. Then, feeling her eyes, I turned and without a smile she took the food and was about to walk off. She looked into my eyes again and took the cigarette out of my mouth and walked off with it. Many a time since I tried painting her face but I have not got those eyes right yet. Without those eyes she could be anyone. With those perfect eyes she could not be anyone but her.
