I'd Rather Fight is part of a series of paintings that explores, often with humour, the archetypes and stereotypes that appear Classical painting and popular culture. The title, "I'd Rather Fight" is taken from an 1950's cigarette advertisement, "I'd rather fight than switch..(brands)". It is painted in a style evocative of studio photography and 20th century film star posters. The young man in the portrait has received a black eye. He is looking up admiringly at someone, his combatant? Did he win or lose the fight? Traditional normes of masculinity, expectations and constraints of what it means to be "manly" are playfully examined here.
