Hyde Park Painting

As a geometric abstract artist I often find inspiration in the abstract qualities of ordinary objects and images such as maps and architectural drawings but also items like footpaths and roads displaying certain patterns and/or arrangements. In this case ‘Hyde Park’ was inspired by a 19th Century map of Sydney I discovered in the State Library, showing the lay-out and paths of the park in its early design. I use the patterns of these designs predominantly as a starting point and manipulate and recreate the shapes and lines to suit my artistic objectives. As my name suggests, my background is Dutch and most of my artistic influences stem from the early 20th Century Dutch artists involved in the innovation and exploration of this then new direction in art. I also have a great interest in the Bauhaus, the German school of Arts (1919-1933) and its associated artistic movements. It is the artistic freedom which comes with geometric abstraction that allows me to keep experimenting and grow as an artist
