This new series is multidisciplinary as the paintings integrate silkscreen printing, drawing, painting, photography, wood burning, and collage making. We have found ourselves in a state of global isolation due to the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. This unprecedented degree of social isolation has made people hungry for connections – especially children. Such circumstances have inspired me to create a new series of paintings highlighting children's isolation as an effect that can be shared and, perhaps, overcome through compassionate and collective, social engagements. In my work entitled "Golden Era," the subjects are exclusively children. They connect viewers with the iconography of authenticity, simplicity, happiness, and hope as values that are often missing in adulthood (using the symbols of my own Persian childhood). I make marks on wooden canvas by burning it into its layered surface, using electric elements. Layering and delayering the surface of wood through the act of burning allows me to convey the complexity and ambiguity of existence. The use of textiles in my work carries emotional, social, aesthetic, and spiritual meanings. By creating patterns inspired by old Persian tilework of my grand fother house located in Isfahan, Iran, and through silkscreen printing on textiles, I visualize concepts of the multiple layers of dreams, time, and memory through iconography, symbols, and pattern-making. This artwork invites visitors to think about the metaphorical power of symbols in relation to the childhood figures in the paintings. My composition is meant to encourage viewers to activate their childhood memories and see themselves through a child’s eyes, to feel their pain, sorrow, hope, joy, and vulnerability.

Shahrzad Amin is an Iranian-Canadian award-winning interdisciplinary artist with more than twelve years of diverse experiences as a sculptor, multimedia and installation artist, model designer, stop-motion artist, and potter. She creates socially engaging art pieces that invoke thoughts and encourage conversations about socio-cultural issues that surround us. Shahrzad makes original pieces that truly move people to feel intense emotions. Her interest in fundamental social issues such as democracy, human rights, equality, and migration has informed an art practice examining diasporic and socio-cultural subjectivities through the lenses of art practice, sensory ethnographic filmmaking, architectural design, gender, and language. Her works highlight a social openness and necessity for global international connectivity, by applying the historical eastern architectural figures such as arch bridges as a metaphor for overcoming cultural distances. She obtained a BFA from Tehran University of Art in 2010 and a MFA from OCADU in 2020.
