About The Artwork
Framed still life with a single pink geranium in a small liquor glass. This still life is part of a series I have been working on recently. They are all painted from life and staged in a shadowbox I have set up in my studio space. These smaller paintings allow me to experiment with different light and other effects, such as the transparency of glass for example. Here I felt the "barely there" glass and dull mauve background enhanced the beauty of the flower and its somewhat nostalgic status as "last survivor" (on my balcony, that is...) of the summer of 2016... Since the frame I had chosen for illustration purposes seems to go well with the painting, I finally decided to offer it already framed. The wooden frame is made out of an Italian moulding and has been patinated to give it a vintage, "pre-loved" look. Oil on MDF panel.

People are the main subject in my work - a face is simply a fascinating landscape. Even though I am attracted to beauty, somehow there is always a tiny touch of bitterness that slips into my paintings, tempering the sweetness. My heros may be glamorous, they are still mildly concerned. Will their beauty keep its promise? Will love be around the corner? "Joie de vivre" versus "German Angst"... At times when the latter tries to dominate, I turn towards motives found in nature and still life. The techniques I prefer are oils, pastels and watercolor. More recently, I have started to do linocuts and etchings, as well.
