About The Artwork

The first in a series of works exploring pictorial styles and conventions of different cultures. Ken's mother was born in Japan and there remains a Japanese influence going through the work. The picture uses three 'modes' to create an illusion: the cloud is done in the decorative kimono style used for draperies, the landscape references the golden age of Japanese prints - Hokusai. Hiroshige and Utamaro, and the figure is a contemporary geisha from Kyoto, painted in the modern realist-style. Even though the three components of the picture are in completely different, 'languages' we can still read the composition as a traditional landscape with background, foreground and figure. The painting is worked on by both artists over time, each artist (Ken/Seetha) adding their own touches. The title EFS (Ethnological Forgery Series) derives from the German rock band CAN, who in the 1970s produced a series of "Ethnological Forgeries", sounding like (or in the style of) music from diverse cultures, yet recognisably their own..
