Because I have a very vivid sleeping dream life I've tried to represent this other world with its feelings of not being anchored and yet being safe on awakening, its perspectives and strange objects that are so meaningful in the dream and yet cannot be identified when one wakes. I want this painting to help us remember that even though we spend a third of our lives asleep that time is so important to our psyches and our souls. I wanted to paint this work in resonant and vibrant colours to represent the richness of our inner world and also to create a contrast with the paleness of the woman's skin, her body that is heavy, moored, fixed and cannot move the way the mind can.

I have drawn for as long as I can remember, my childhood endeavours becoming more proficient through my determined practice over the years. Throughout my adult life I have continued to draw, an activity that gives me great pleasure and satisfaction. I am an enthusiastic student of the techniques of the Old Masters and their widely varying portrayals of the human body, common to all, unique to each, and always challenging and inspiring to depict creatively. I am self-taught and paint in watercolour and, more recently, acrylic. I use a limited palette and only 3 or 4 top-quality brushes. I utilise the storehouse of impressions I have built up from my travels as a musician.
