Fog Painting

This painting is from an occasional series of work based on short Japanese poems. This one loosely translates as: Fog engulfs my hut. I feel as though I have melted into the sky It was written by written by a poet named Myoe who lived from 1173 to 1232. I like working from short Japanese poems (or at least translations of them!) as they are visual, evocative, intense and often filled with duality or moods. It also intrigues me how well they fit in with the modern world, even when some like this one are almost a thousand years old. The painting is 42" x 24" (the same proportions and size as modern flat screen TV) in a simple frame. It is painted using artist grade oil paints on board and is framed in a simple tray style moulding which has been painted using the same harmonies and discords as the painting. This is an integral part of the painting and helps it achieve a stunning glow. It dazzles, just as looking into the dawn sky should. I would strongly recommend retaining this frame but using it as a slip, with a second, neutral frame around it to tie it into the decor of the room it hangs in.
