About The Artwork

Scratchboard w/ Indian Inks "Farfalle" (Butterflies in Italian) is the culmination of the body of work Kristian has done for the past eight years, learning and mastering the medium of Clayboard Black. Better known as Scratchboard, this wooden surface is covered with a thin layer of white clay, coated with a thin layer of black indian ink. With a sharp tool the composition is scratched, removing the black ink, and exposing the white clay underneath. Once scratched, those lines are painted using a brush and colored indian inks. To seal and protect the piece, it is sprayed with an acrylic coating. It took approximately 400 hours of tedious, precise, and detailed work to complete this one piece. As the title states, these are butterflies, thousands of them, all in flight creating a unified mesh of color, form and texture. If you look closely at the artwork, each butterfly is made up of 4 petal-liked shapes joined at one point. Once your eyes understand this shape, follow their flight and let your eyes travel slowly following the lines and shapes. You will notice bigger and bigger butterflies, some are so big it is hard to notice them at a glance, but if you stare and follow the lines, you will see them. This progression in size represents the butterflies age and growth, the bigger, the older, the smaller, the younger. This change or progression can also be appreciated though color. The smaller the butterfly, the more green in color. As it grows, this green changes to a turquiose color, followed by different blues. As the butterflies get older and bigger, you will see the blue changing to purple, violets and pinks, then reds and oranges ending in yellow for the very old and large. This gradual change in color represents the butterfly's life cycle. From start to finish, the piece followed an order based on rules that reflect a process Kristian developed to achieve a consistent balance in space, through shapes, form, color and texture... all converging to produce the illusion of perfect symmetry. Kristian has named this process "Chaotic Balance". Through this discipline, he is able to balance space amidst so much chaos.

Imagination fused with life, travels and dreams... is the expression of my work. Every line, every stroke scrutinized by perfectionism is laid to rest, with endless incessant repetition. "Balanced Chaos" is its foundation and ardent detail it's ongoing culmination. For the past twenty years I have explored the technique known as Scratchboard. A clay covered hardboard panel coated with black India ink. Once the board has been scratched using a sharp metal tool, those lines or scratches are painted with a brush, using colored Indian inks or watercolors. The final image is then sealed with acrylic. Adapting and mastering this medium has been a great experience. It has allowed my style to merge and flourish with the combination of drawing and the challenges of etching or scratching, taking away versus applying. The creation of compositions through lines only, calls for the exploration of these and the infinite ways of their application to achieve motion, texture and color through obsessive intricacy or plain simplicity. My compositions strive to achieve balance, both in structure and color, which lead to the development of applicable rules that I now project and apply as a theory throughout my work. This theory has allowed me to structure my work, composition and it's creative process, production time, and above all, guidance for assured masterful completion of the work. The rules of this theory evolve as the artwork evolves, however its founding law, the equal merger of chaos and balance, always remains constant, hence the name "Chaotic Balance". The visions I portray will continue to evolve and reflect this strong theoretic pillar I created, while building upon it, and helping others understand the relation between empty space and all surrounding factors within my work. https://www.facebook.com/KristianRangelVallari https://www.facebook.com/DeManos
