I’ve admired and enjoyed Elizabeth Warren from her days on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart years ago. Her clear, crisp way of reframing how we think about what government can and should be drew me in. To me, her ideas weren’t radical; they were grounded in wanting to create a world that works for people—to make it easier for people to have a decent life. Her approach is grounded in logic and empathy—we are all in this country together, let’s figure out a way to make it work together. I was excited when she decided to run for President. I loved watching videos of her running to catch the train or standing for hours signing autographs and taking pinky promise photos with girls who aspired to run for office and make a difference. That kind of idealism doesn’t always go over well in a world that is sometimes so hard—but for my idealist self, I loved her push to dream big and fight hard. It just appealed to my hopeful, optimistic self so deeply. She wasn’t a perfect candidate—none are—but she was one who raised the bar when it came to having a plan and figuring out what to do and how to be when things go sideways. She was unafraid to advance a progressive agenda. And she had her adorable Golden Retriever Bailey, who loved to steal any scene he was in and any burritos on the table. But most of all, one of my favorite things was the joy she brought to the campaign trail and debate stage. And that’s why Elizabeth Warren is a Joy Icon. Born in London, England, my parents and I emigrated to the States when I was two. I hold an MFA in Visual Arts at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, an MA from The George Washington University, and a BA from Davidson College. I am married to a retired U.S. Marine, Tom, and we live in Seattle with our beloved Golden Chow, Mory, aka Studio Dog.
