About The Artwork

This work was inspired by a canoe tour of Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park. The participants were mostly novice canoeists. The tour guide gave a brief tutorial in paddling and the group was divided up with 3 to a canoe. The tour took in notable places around the historic lake and on one occasion a moose was spotted which prompted many photos on cellphones. But thunder was in the air on the late summer afternoon and so the moment depicted here are the anxious glances which said it was time to head back to the dock.

"There are few more satisfying and emotive experiences than making marks on a piece of paper... The process of becoming an artist in the traditional sense is embracing the set of disciplines whereby one learns to give his marks greater tangible and universal meaning to a wider audience over a longer period of time"
