About The Artwork

The portrait of Darius Boyd (recent captain Brisbane Broncos and member of the Australian Rugby League team) represents the mental health struggle he found himself in recently. The painting aims to position Darius in respect to the affliction and show that it can be defeated. Using his inner strength, Darius fiercely forced himself through the depression and now uses these skills to help other sufferers. The portrait of Darius is simplified yet detailed. I have chosen pyrography as the medium as it produces a unique result. The burning etches the portrait into the timber creating a strong impression, and depending upon the position of the viewer it offers different experiences. It forces the audience to determine their own viewpoint to interpret the artwork. Like life, it is not until the audience takes a step back from the art that they can determine what the burning is all about, and therefore see the bigger picture more clearly.

Edward Trost has more than 30 years’ experience in the arts, working in a variety of media including ceramics, large scale sculpture, and animated feature films. In his portraiture, Trost renders his subject’s likeness as a collection of scorched tones, utilising a pyrographic technique to create individual burn marks on plywood. He selects subjects who have faced mental health challenges with inner strength and resilience. By highlighting recognisable people either actively working through depression or advocating on behalf of the community, Trost hopes his art will help to correct misconceptions about these debilitating illnesses.
