The Clarion river in stunning autumn colors. I want to thank Artist Kevin Kaltenbaugh for giving me permission to paint my impression of his amazing photograph of the Clarion River. Please take a look at the rest of Kevins amazing body of work on his website: http://www.kaltenbaughphotography.zenfolio.com/ The story of this painting is strange...I was originally commissioned to do a painting that I was told was an old family photo. I was given the photo in a sealed laminated plastic holder and it seemed heavy to me but I was excited to paint this photo and didnt ask any further questions of my customer. Preparatory sketches ensued and even a small study done in water colors but after a period of time and staring at the photo I realized it was awfully fresh for what was supposed to be an old family photo the colors were very crisp and clean and upon inspection I was able to remove the plastic laminate cover and found out that it was actually a refrigerator magnet that had been made out of a postcard that was copyrighted to Kevin. Needless to say I was not very happy and had to cancel the commission. But many years later I came across the Photo in my desk and I decided to contact Kevin and he graciously allowed me to use the photo to work from for this painting. For me working on this painting was an amazing experience, the reflections in the water changing with the flow of the river drew me in and provided a unique challenge, especially melding the blue and orange colors into a cohesive body that flowed and moved like water. The contrast between blue and orange tends to trick the eye into seeing them meet at opposing planes with strong dividing lines. Kevins photograph captured this visually difficult boundary in crisp perfection, I have seen many photos where the reflection looks like it sits on top of the water and gives a false and displeasing look. I only hope my impression of the image looks clear and true as well because therein lies the soul of my painting. Thank you for looking. "I use professional grade golden heavy body acrylics on all of my paintings which are painted on a premium quality bespoke canvas, which helps with ease of framing. However, the painting can be displayed as is, the museum profile of the edges provide a professional look and many artworks are displayed this way. I ship all of my work in a custom made crate, that I build myself, of high quality wood in which the paintings are french fitted within the packing material to ensure no damage upon arrival. On the back of the paintings is affixed your certificate of authenticity, which contains the title of the work, a registration number that corresponds with my records, and a short description of the painting. It is easily removed so it can be placed on the backing of a professionally made frame. My anagram is branded into a stretcher as well to provide another mark of authenticity. Please contact Saatchi if you wish to know more about a specific painting ...there is often stories, preliminary sketches or studies that I may be able to provide upon request. Thank you, M.McDermott

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
