Sometimes your first impression of an Oil Painting can change in very unexpected ways. This Oil Painting started as a study of two childhood rockers belonging to me and Karen A Smith. The history in the rocker spans four generations in my family. My rocker was handed down to me by my grandmother. I seem to remember some of the time with the rocker as a young boy. I have pictures and so does Karen. As soon as I saw the picture Karen took of the two rockers together in the basement of her mother's home, I immediately knew it was something unusual. Very special and I needed to record it. It had a feeling of a relationship that Karen and I share and a history that is miles apart. I liked that the white chair has a rush seat and the arms, back and legs are hand turned in a fancy type finishing as opposed to the slat seat and straight legs, arms, back and the dark colored wood in Karen's chair. It certainly doesn't reflect our personalities, but it does show a contrast in who we are as Artists. As I progressed with the painting I imaged many social and psychological implications in analyzing this Oil Painting. It can be looked at in so many ways besides the obvious. I was going to Title this Oil Painting "Off my Rocker", but I decided on a different name :) Let me know what you think!
