About The Artwork

My aim as a painter is to express the hidden beauty I find in objects and scenes, offering the viewer a personal interpretation of the world where our individual sensibilities might meet. “Canyon” is on the cusp of reality and abstraction that expresses some of my strongest feelings as well as my intense love of colour. This work shows a balance between the ‘reality’ of apparently ‘substantial’ objects and a rather ambiguous, formless world. The acrylic colours are slowly built up and merged, painted over and blended again to produce subtle contrasts and tonal relationships. The calm, cool blues are balanced and offset by the use of fiery magenta and warm yellows. Black diagonals move the eye across the painting while the verticals are there to create stability. This landscape painting embraces a sense of spirituality, and a love of colour as well as a passion for paint itself. Although nature remains fundamental to my practice, this work shows a very personal perspective and vision. The painting is unframed, but I paint around the edges so that the work has a feeling of expanding beyond its physical boundaries.

Originally a historian of art and architecture, then a curator and consultant in the architectural field, I turned some years ago towards the more direct experience of creating art itself. I am a self-taught artist, and enjoy discovering different ways of depicting the world around me, from intimate still lifes, to expansive landscapes and dramatic underwater views. My landscape paintings are worked both ‘en plein air’ and in the studio, and are inspired by my travels abroad as well as closer to home, and I enjoy exploring the abstract qualities that can be discovered in the world around us. My series of paintings of the underwater world (‘en pleine mer’!) is based on my experiences as a scuba diver. These works highlight a very personal view of this amazing world, and have developed an abstract quality, with textures building up on the painted surface to reflect the unusual subject matter. I paint still lifes to further my exploration of colour, and love capturing distorted reflections in glass and metal objects, or instilling the still life with a contemporary feel by using bold crops and vivid colours, to create dynamic and engaging works. My aim as a painter is to express the hidden beauty that I find in objects and scenes, seeking out those that are perhaps not typically considered to be an artist’s subject matter. I work predominantly in acrylics or oils on canvas. I exhibit regularly, especially with ArtCan and the Richmond Art Society. My works have been acquired by private collectors all over the world. I work from a studio in South West London, UK.
