About The Artwork
While my husband was rock-climbing up the Whitney-Gilman route, I took a grueling hike myself with a backpack of oils/canvas, intending on painting plain air. After 6 hours I couldn't find any thing that really inspired me. I wandered through a ditch by the side of the highway and found a great composition and was able to paint a small plain air that later became this formal studio work. Thing is, looked like two mean storm fronts were coming in, and Rich and friend were only halfway up the route.I vowed to paint this landscape as a homage to no ill-fortune happening. This part of Cannon Mountain is dangerous, because hikers and climbers can't see a storm coming in. I commit to painting complexities in Nature, and here we have several eco-systems--swamp, dead trees in verdant forest, scree slope, granite, making for an interesting composition.

I was born in Quebec, Canada and have been drawing since childhood. I attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while working full time, and received several awards and prizes there. I moved to Colorado twenty-five years ago to be closer to the woods, mountains, and rivers. My plein air works tend to be rendered in pastel; my studio work, in oils. My subject matter references include sketching in the field, taking notes on color, and photographing what I see. I find that my shortcomings as a photographer are a benefit to me as a painter as they leave more room for embellishment and imagination.
