I like to cut into the surface of the painting as a reminder of the façade, the Maya, a gorgeous brutal illusion, what we see is only part of the picture. I have always escaped into fantasy, for better or for worse. As a child I played in the woods with moss and bark and trees, making fairy houses and imagined I could live there too. I am fascinated by the hidden and secret aspects of a piece of art and create them with layering of images and these little inner scenes that can be viewed through the 2 openings in this painting. I started with the sky in this painting as the space or the peace or the God that is always available, always there, but gets covered over by thinking and working… in the case of this painting I’m painting about looping, intricate, loud thoughts like cogs in a machine clicking and clanking, but most of them, not highly effective – which is alluded to with the highly textured monotone yellow. Our mind can weave a kind of insanity that blocks the way forward, which is what I experienced when I couldn’t stop drinking alcohol, even though I wanted to. At the time I painted this I was living on the Danube in Budapest, showing art in different countries; all very exciting. But my life was also tangling, twisting, and destructing at a fast rate. The rose represents a violence, the kind of violence in our lives that is for our highest good – if we are able to follow the urgings that come to us. We must have contrast, something to push against, something that opposes us, so that we can have a reason to make different choices that bring joy and weightlessness, sparkle and magic. I did not fix myself. We don’t grow the rose, we can clear the ground, make choices about placement, sun, hydration. The rose grows not because we will it, but because it is inevitable, reliable life. I make different choices, plant different seeds and surrender to the forces that be, and roses grow in my life instead of confusion.

I do oil paintings as well as mixed media paintings that I cover and/or fill with internal sculpture. I love building complexity with layers and materials. It speaks to me of the many ways of seeing reality. With the understanding that many issues arise from being removed from our true nature, making these paintings has been a way to map the alchemy in my emotional landscape and contemplate ideas about good and bad. I use a combination of abstract forms, figurative forms, and the relief sculpture to visually acknowledge the variety of physical as well as invisible aspects to experience. I have personally come a long way from a place of addiction and hopelessness, and art has been one avenue through which my life has opened up. I am interested in the connection between thought and spiritual fruition. Since all action begins in thought. In my experience, thinking is extremely hard work, but can open whole spectacular vistas of emotion, capacity and meaning that were previously unknowable. In my worlds, there are fires to light, roads to follow, good food to eat, battles to be fought, devotions to preform, dance steps to master and rest to take. My art is about exposing what is hidden from oneself and affirming the point of moving on into the mystery of one’s journey.
