Budica Acrylic on Canvas-Board 24" X 18" Budica was a Welsh heroine, the wife of a pro-Roman Chieftain who was too naive to believe that his wishes would be respected by them after his death. Although his will dictated that half of his wealth was to be given to Rome and half to his family, the Romans not only took it all but raped his children and mistreated Budica. Finding and stirring ferment among like-minded, disenfranchised Britons, she led a rebellion that in a short time gathered so much pace that they terrorised, burnt and massacred every village and town on their way from the Welsh mountains to Londonia, today’s London. It is surmised that the loss of the whole of the 9 th Legion could be attributed to her exploits. It was such a drain on moral and recourses that fresh Legions had to be brought from the European mainland that although eventually destroying the insurgence, Romans could only hold on but never dominate the land they occupied. Eventually after successive defeats and further losses it saw them abandon Briton after finding no matter the destruction they wreaked, tribes including the Scots were not about to be subdued. She is the symbol of the common obstinacy against the established corrupt power of foreign government.
