Blue morning glories on a bamboo fence. Japanese ink and Japanese gansai watercolours on rice paper. Morning glories are a very popular subject in Japanese art, they symbolise innocence and love, thanks to their heart-shaped leaves and lovely trumpet-shaped flowers. "Asagao" (morning glories in Japanese) are known to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Historically, morning glories were known in Japan as a medicinal plant. However, during Edo period, a mutation of the plant brought about unusual beautiful variations and morning glories exploded in popularity. Japanese botanical flower books contain numerous illustrations of flower variations. They became so fashionable that at some point morning glories competitions were held in Kyoto and flower rankings were printed on a special sheet of paper, just like sumo rankings. In art, morning glories are always a much loved and appreciated subject. This particular artwork was also inspired by the Maltese landscape, where morning glories thrive, thanks to the warm and sunny climate. This artwork is my appreciation of the delicate blue flower. Some info on materials: I am using a handmade Japanese ink stick, produced by a family-run business with a 400 years ink-making history, the oldest in Japan. The ink has a cool, slightly bluish-greyish tint, very unusual. It comes from soot, received by burning pine. Japanese watercolours are highly pigmented yet maintain their transparency. The painting is signed, sealed, wet-mounted on backing rice paper and ready to be framed or mounted on a silk scroll. Please use acid-free adhesives when framing. It is manually cut, please leave a few mm error margin for dimensions. Note that colours may differ due to differences in devices.

Malta
Canadian artist based in Malta. I studied oil painting in the South Studio Atelier in Malta. The Atelier follows the great traditions of the Florence Academy of Art, so do I. The transience of life pushes me to create, to capture the moments of beauty I see all around. I also studied Asian art, in China, Canada, and in Japan. Fragile rice paper gives a different feeling. It's the best canvas to express the complex simplicity of ink painting. I am using centuries-old Japanese recipe to mount my own artwork.
