The Sketching part, and some burnt wood for referance
I only used handmade tradisional old masters paint just pigment and linseed oil binder. This series of paints are all natural earth pigments which i mine, mill and produce myself in the true tradion of old masters paints. My paint making story can be followed on Facebook at "joe joubert artist oil paint".
Building up the layers and amazing to see how the translucency and glow in the paint starts developing. That glow that is evident in the old masters paint but almost impossable to recreate with most moder day synthetic pigments and the biggest difference lies in the larger particle size. The paint behave different and forms a much stronger paint film when comared to moderday paints
Tradisional hand made paint makes the combination of pallet knife and brushwork a true pleasure. The biggest difference lies in the behavior of the tradisional old masters paints

Joe Joubert: Artist Biography: Joe has spent over four decades immersed in the world of Art. Born in the Kalahari District of South Africa in 1963, Joe’s artistic journey has been shaped by his fascination with the interaction between man and nature, and the complexities of human nature itself. Joe’s artistic vision is deeply rooted in Africanism, drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of the African continent. While his ideas manifest in an imaginary world, the influence of African imagery and landscapes is a crucial ingredient in his artwork. Joe's intention goes beyond merely depicting nature for its aesthetic value. Rather, he seeks to explore the profound lessons that nature can teach us about living in harmony and balance with all beings that inhabit the Earth. Embracing Imperfection: Nature as a Teacher Unlike those who strive for perfection, Joe acknowledges the inherent imperfections of both nature and humanity. He recognizes that perfection is unattainable, and instead encourages us to embrace our flaws and limitations. By doing so, we can learn valuable lessons from nature itself. Joe suggests that by relinquishing assumptions of superiority, we can unlock a wealth of knowledge from nature, discovering how to coexist harmoniously with all the Earth's inhabitants. Joe's artistry also finds inspiration in the barren landscapes of the desert. He believes that even within the harshest environments, opportunity lies waiting to be discovered. By shifting our perspective and recognizing the embryonic potential contained within desolate landscapes, we can uncover hidden possibilities. Just as nature and the human spirit can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Joe's work reminds us that with a little nourishment and determination, we too can achieve the seemingly impossible. Today, humanity faces a crucial challenge that demands a shift in our thinking. Joe emphasizes the urgent need to stop threatening our life support system. Through his art, he aims to awaken our collective consciousness to the importance of preserving and protecting the natural world. By recognizing our interconnectedness with all living beings and embracing a mindset of harmony and balance, we can create a sustainable future for generations to come. Joe's artwork is often characterized by its surreal elements. His unique style combines imagination, and symbolism, to create dreamlike compositions.
