In my most recent series of paintings, created for an exhibition at Gallery 66 NY in Cold Spring, NY, I challenged myself to take piles of wood ash and turn them into something beautiful. I usually let my paintings develop organically, but with this series, I decided to intentionally create botanical imagery because of its vast symbolism across cultures. I also liked the idea of depicting flowers growing from ash with masses of layers that may surprise viewers and entice them to take a closer look. Beauty is fleeting and creates its own challenges. Within each layer of these paintings, I hope viewers can feel the heaviness, visualize the expansion, float with the grace, and experience the temptation that can all come with the weight of existence, even for beautiful things.

Anna Bergin is a celebrated emerging artist from New York. She has found success with both commercial and private collectors internationally. Anna majored in Fine Arts with a concentration in painting at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with continuing education at Skidmore College and the Fashion Institute of Technology. After more than a decade in Beacon, NY her studio and home are now in Newburgh, NY. Anna's paintings, whether straightforward or not, are always struggling with themselves, attacked by ornate beauty, fitting into figurative forms, or formed out of nature contrasting with cities. The color palate is often arguing with the expressive action and emotion in the painting. Many times there is a thickness to the paint that tempts the viewer with the yearning to touch. The thickness comes from experimentation with materials, often using wood ash and stone dust to achieve density. We have so many complex thoughts combining to make us who we are. The world around us can push us down or inspire us, all within a minute’s time. Anna Bergin's work is just trying to sort it all out, in her own language, one painting at a time. http://www.annabergin.com
