Abstraction of Baldwin Beach on Maui. Horizon Series. 4-9-2012. It's been hanging on the wall drying for over a month. I softened the horizon line which I like because it gives the impression of surf. The colors are much more vibrant and the bottom half is a very light sand. I like it, I think it’s done. The process for this painting started as a photo of the beach. I tried several version with a digital tablet. It was in three sections. Painted several realistic beach scenes, none of which I liked. Then I went back to the original idea of having the horizon bisect the center of the canvas. The whole process for this piece was over 6 months. This is my favorite beach on Maui. I was exploring horizontal sections and proportions. Artists and photographers talk about the "rule of thirds" to make a well balance composition. How unoriginal, boring and shows no creative process. Rules are overrated and often stifling. Even though this image only shows a portion of the canvas, it shows 5 distinct horizontal areas. If you look closer at the full original there are 5 more. The final version of this was distilled and simplified to 2 main areas and 1 subtle zone.

I love a good medium rare rib-eye (edit: to many happy cow videos on Facebook. I'm turning vegetarian.), garlic mash potatoes and a nice glass of red. But I'm not having it for dinner every night. Just like my art work, I'm not gonna do the same thing every day. I’m always exploring different types of media, styles and especially ideas to create unique works. That said I do have a certain aesthetic all my own. I put a lot of thought into my work, there is a deeper meaning and it's not all about creating eye candy. My art is for those who appreciate originality and don't buy into what's "trending." Life is Art p.s. Hummus is horrible, but I love that cucumber, mint, yogurt thing.
