About The Artwork

Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and childbirth, has many epithets that reflect her various roles and attributes. One of her epithets is Agrotera, meaning “huntress,” which emphasizes her role as the protector of the wild and the goddess of hunting. Another is Limnatis, which means “of the marshes,” linking her to natural, liminal places like forests, mountains, and marshes. The epithet “Potnia Theron,” which translates to “Mistress of Animals,” reflects her dominion over the animal kingdom and her role as a protector of wildlife and the wilderness. The term is first used once by Homer as a descriptor of Artemis and often used to describe female divinities associated with animals.
