About The Artwork

Between abstraction and realism lies a vast universe of possibilities. I’ve tapped into these visions with my new portfolio “The Edge of Color.” Using objects both familiar and unfamiliar, I record their shapes in fluid black directional lines like calligraphy overlapping and connecting in surprising and unexpected compositions. Free of gravity, objects float freely in spaces of vibrant colors outlined in black lines resembling glass mosaics. This portfolio extends outside my studio into parks, museums and drives in small towns where views through my window present surprisingly new shapes, colors and forms to be abstracted later into imaginary compositions on canvas and paper. The lyricism of the lines and transparencies of the paint make forms look as though they are moving through each other’s space and this is the intent of my work – to surprise, intrigue and delight the viewer with vibrant, colorful and unexpected compositions.

Marsha Solomon has been living and working as a painter in New York. Before moving to New York, Solomon received a B.A. in Art from the University of Maryland, and did graduate studies in painting at the highly regarded Maryland Institute of Art, and later at the Art Students League in New York. She worked as an art teacher both in the public schools in Baltimore, and as a private instructor.Marsha Solomons work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the New York area, as well as in Chicago, Washington, DC, and Columbus, Ohio. She has been included in publications such as The New York Art Review and the NY Arts Magazine. After painting large abstract works for many years, Solomon has returned to realism with an extensive series of still-lifes on both canvas and paper. Her training in abstraction has given her a unique approach in composing her paintings, in which she explores the relationships of movement and color, arranging them in an apparently flattened space. Marsha cites her inspirations in this series as being sources as diverse as Japanese woodblock prints, the color and linear flow in Matisses work, and still-life compositions from Dutch genre paintings through Czanne.A single, unified shape unfolds onto a white space. Patterns connect and define the form as colors communicate in harmonic chords. My recent series of contemporary still life paintings, which encompasses the work of several years, presents a distinctive vision. I use for my compositions intricately woven fabrics and objects collected from around the world, brightly colored glass, and antique ceramics to create a unified form that is both inventive and meticulously composed. For me, as an artist, a still life is never still.Works by Marsha Solomon available for viewing on my websitewww.marshasolomon.com TapestriesVessels of TimeEquivalentsColors of LightVines and FlowersFrom Rhythm to Form
