About The Artwork
This painting is like most of my paintings inspired by the pulsing rhythms of modern music. The rhythmic calligraphic lines and marks are a direct response to music and the painting evolved with this influence in tandem to the interest and drive of themes and concerns within contemporary abstract painters now. I am particularly inspired by Fiona Rae, Bridget Riley and also the primitive, visceral nature of Cecily Browns paint work. I want my works to be both optical and concrete as well as expressive and transcendental even.

As an art student I became a prolific reader of texts by contemporary and 20th century artists. That fired my passion for the history of art, particularly the form, technique and process of Modernism, the free creativity of Abstract Expressionism, and the structure of late 20th century graphic design. Like all students of the 90s, I also indulged my passion for music - for drum and bass, hip hop and techno – and the rhythm, speed and structure of these forms of music became a fuel for my work in the studio. Since that time, I have worked hard to develop a kind of calligraphy on canvas that is unique to my experience of living and painting".
