PART OF THE WHOLE – Part A1 The main inspiration for this painting project arises from the question how reality can be perceived. Do we always perceive the whole or only parts, till we receive new insights? Or is it like Jaques Lacan defined reality: A trinity of a symbolic, an imaginative and a real level? A second inspiration reveals by the physicist Ernst Chladni (1756–1827) who invented a technique to visualize resonance ("Chladni figures", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_Chladni). The prolongation of sound by synchronous vibration of a neighboring object seems to be the main carrier for information. Chladni figures show also interesting similarities to patterns found in nature (http://echo.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/ECHOdocuView?url=/permanent/library/5M6VYMSC/pageimg&mode=imagepath&pn=5). Beginning with a single sinus wave I created a frozen resonance which shows a X lying on a side ( >< ). On the symbolic level this >< stands for the X chromosome and the beginning of life. The sinus wave stands for information transmission and interaction. I scaled the image to 12 x 20 m (39 x 65 ft) and divided it into 256 single images, each with a size of 80 x 130 cm (31,4 x 51,1 inch = golden ratio). 256 is a binary multiple (2^8). The binary system is the main basis for the technological and information evolution of our days. It has been developed by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716). It is known that he received a copy of 64 I Ching hexagrams during his work on a "Mathesis Universalis", which reinforced his work on the binary system.
