A man of metal Painting

This portrait draws its inspiration from medical anatomy studies, drawings and illustrations from turn of the century medical books and encyclopedias, as well as, medical figurines and and human musculature models. The doctors/tinkers/mechanics building the Tin Man are reminiscent of Renaissance painters. With their baggy woven shirts they sculpt muscles out of wire and tamp layers of metal into protective layers of tough skin. The outer shell of the Tin Man's body draws inspiration from the art deco architecture and statues, with its sharp angles that flow into long, sometimes curved, geometric shapes that suggest motion in a fixed position. The background is amorphous, a non depiction of an operating space that is vague and grey with nonexplanatory advertising inserted into the mix.
