About The Artwork
The work was influenced by Daoist and Buddhist philosophies and imagery from Islamic art. Galileo's idea of science being the language of nature is a foundation for the work and aims to deal less with human expression and more with revealing the natural qualities of the materials themselves. Inspired by feelings associated with studying the Mandarin the shapes used are Chinese characters, often pictographic, and relate to concepts of man, nature, earth, sky, cycles, and agriculture amongst other things; and being geometric do not seem instantly recognisable as Chinese to the foreign eye. Hanging wall-piece layering seeds, red clay, porcelain and Chinese ink. The seeds grow through the top layers over a period of several days and then wilt and die while the clay dries and cracks.
