About The Artwork

There are 108 nails in this 8ft x 3ft piece of white-painted marine plywood. On each nail hangs a stone with a hole. These were collected from the West Wittering foreshore by the artist and many guests over a couple of years. The question is how long it would take the process of attrition to wear down the biggest stone at the top to the size of one of the smallest at the bottom? And how long did it take the burrowing molluscs to drill the holes in the first place? As each contributor signs their name and the date on the back of their stone, and puts it on the grid, they may reflect on this phenomenal passage of time and their own place within it.
