The Columns Installation Project began with the idea of how can a painting be 4 dimensional like a sculpture? 4th dimension being time. Due to the physical size and structure of this space where most of the columns views are blocked by walls this became ideal for this project. With this arrangement it is impossible to view the piece in it's entirety in a single glance. You must move through the space and have a memory or not of what you have seen. You also have the ability to choose your view, close or far, with or without overlaps etc. There are 10 columns in two rows of 5. Only the middle two are free standing, one on each side. The others are partially sunken into the walls. The design of the color is simple, one row is warm and the other is cool. Looking south down either side the procession of five is light, looking north the five are dark. The other inspiration for the piece which it finally was titled after is the poem by Constantine Cavafy, The Journey to Ithaca which stresses the adventure lies in the journey not the destination. This is true of this piece as well. The experience with it is yours to be found as you pass through the halls and open sections, pausing and traversing at will. The installation is located in New Haven CT at the former Parachute factory which is part of the Erector Square artist studios.
