About The Artwork

Book of Babel Taking as a starting point Borges’ vision of the universe described in The Library of Babel, Weston’s The Book of Babel conjures up the physical form of this vision: hexagonal galleries contain a vision of the universe that is ‘infinite and always starting over again. Most of the books in the library are unintelligible, letters thrown together by chance or perversely repeated, but sometimes, in this labyrinth of letters, a reasonable line or sentence is found’. (Andre Maurois, from the Preface to Labyrinths). The Book of Babel not only emphasises this notion of chance and infinite perversity, but also seizes on the necessity for binding in the formation of meaning: letters to form words, words to form sentences, pages to form books. It book work uses the text from The Library of Babel and randomly reconstitutes it to create new, haphazard and chance texts, multilingual or nonsensical, loyal to Borges’ vision. One off, 2001. Ink on acetate, wiro binding.
