About The Artwork

1100 tokens forms part of Andie Scott’s ‘World Tragedy’ series. These installations and paintings challenge the way the news and media moves from one humanitarian disaster to another filling us with emotions and a desperate need to help. The “ sound bites “ of the world move on and we are expected to as well. The World Tragedy series is about making a mark through painting to make sure we do not forget situations that continue to cause that level of distress and outrage that we felt when it was called ‘breaking news’. The installation of 1100 portraits are of prisoners and demonstrators arrested in Mayanmar (Burma), some who have died. It is still in production. The portraits for 1100 Tokens have been sourced from news reports , the aappb website, Campaign for Burma,UK, Free Burmese Political Prisoners Now (fbppn.net) and others. Many of the monk’s portraits have been drawn from pictures taken by the world press of the demonstrations in August & September 2007. These pictures were used by the Military dictatorship to assist with arrests. While the texts around the walls offer information they are not explicit about the torture suffered. The white poles enable the whole work to be dismantled , moved and erected at another gallery with minimum cost and time.

Everything I create starts with a line drawn on a page, a computer, a tablet. All objects and people have familiar characteristics. my FlowerPortraits are a response to how flowers uplift our spirits, seducing our senses through colour, form, smell, location and season. Flowers surround our memories so that they conjure past moments of our lives. My earliest memory of a flower is a cadmium red tulip, tight lipped in a vase on the dining room table. I was too impatient to wait for it to open so I prized the petals apart and peered inside. The intense yellow with the black insect-like stamen and premature pollen covering my fingers shocked me. My walks through Regents Park, Highgate, Primrose Hill and my local community gardens (Culpeper and Olden gardens) are the inspiration for this exhibition as well as the amazing experiences of working in Cornwall at The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
