About The Artwork

In the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró Museum in Palma de Mallorca, a wonderful Rafael Moneo-designed building, the windows are translucent alabaster. The pattern and grain of these alabaster panels inspired a series of silverpoint drawings that I drew there. I later combined colour in some of the drawings to echo the play of light and colour that I watched as the sun moved across the building. Realistic and yet seemingly abstract, this drawing allows one to dialogue, evoke and imagine according to each of our reactions to it - at least, I hope so! The grey, gold veins in the alabaster seemed marvellously to evoke the delicacy and fluidity that silverpoint (drawn with a silver stylus) allows. There is the same lustrous play of light in both stone and metal, and an endless transformation of what one sees, according to the movement of sunshine on the building and even light on the drawing's surface.
