About The Artwork

This simple drawing was done spontaneously with the theme in mind of the past and present merging into an artwork. I wanted to merge the modern woman into the past of the 1920's. The strong lines in her headpiece and makeup gives a nice balance to her blurry and vulnerable exaggerated eyes. Her eyes speak of what it is to be a woman in the past or present and the mystery is there as you keep gazing into her expression. By looking away from the audience, she seems soft and ethereal, yet strong and independent in her isolation. Fashion is also a strong element in my figure drawings of women. The old fashioned headpiece and the typical look of a 1920's woman complements the modern lines of how she was drawn. A minimal colour pallet is my usual signature of not adding too much colour. Often these simple and quick drawings tend to become my favourite pieces and make a strong and decorative element to a desk or wall.

WEBSITE: www.zenadabbous.com BIOGRAPHY Zena Dabbous is a Lebanese-Canadian visual artist who has polarized styles in her paintings, drawings, and mural work---from conceptual abstract figures in acrylics and mixed media, to abstract realism portraits in oil paint. Her multi-cultural and eclectic upbringing brings a novel and conceptual perspective to her artwork and the representation of women is very important to her creations. Zena has exhibited, sold work, and has the Artist Recognition icon on SaatchiArt online. She has done mural artwork in well-known establishments in Kuwait like Bloomingdales’ Middle East and Crystal Towers. She has also collaborated in an important mural collaboration project for the US Embassy that is indefinitely exhibited at Kuwait's Museum of Modern Art. Additionally, she featured in local newspapers and had a featured Interview published at 123ART Magazine-online art magazine based in New York. Through a short time of a couple of years, Zena went from a self-taught artist to a professional. As an emerging artist, she is looking forward to more work, exhibitions, and projects in the future. She currently lives in Kuwait and works at an Art Studio/Gallery, as well as offering freelance work. STATEMENT: As a self-taught artist, I believe in the journey of self discovery through art, as well as emphasizing conceptualization. Creativity starts with an idea, and that should be the most important factor. By mixing realism and abstract in portraits, and minimalism and conceptualism in my figurative work, these discrepant styles can be viewed as a projection of my character and experiences. Women represented with limited colour pallets and minimal detail are common themes to my work.
