This collage piece layers my mushroom cap/lily pad paper drawings, floating and growing together at all different phases, coexisting in their own natural biome. I begin by drawing with pencils and graphite on mat board, then spreading an acrylic layer over the graphite. I hand draw and cut each piece on recycled brown kraft papers, recycled coffee filters and tea bags. The inspiration is to create a micro-macro universe of shapes floating in space together.

Ali Herrmann is a mixed media painter, colorist and science lover, whose work explores cellular structures as an origin into her abstract artworks. Creating what she terms ‘micro-biome landscapes,’ Herrmann uses SEM images and organic shapes as inspiration to explore concepts of blood, bacteria, fungi, and unicellular structures within her boldly colorful, abstract artworks. Exploring themes of repetition, rhythmic orders, geometric shapes, and chaos-order theory, Ali brings attention to nature's details that are often overlooked.
