About The Artwork

This drawing is one of a series that were stimulated by my interest in how prejudice against some people is based on fear or ignorance. William Congrieve, the playwright, had this profound line in his play "The double dealer"... "No mask like open truth to cover lies, as to go naked is the best disguise." Equally perversely, the technique I employed is, what I call, subtractive drawing. I blacken white paper and reveal the figure by removing the charcoal with erasers. While being conceptually satisfying it also produces an effect not unlike the late lamented 'silver' prints of pre-digital black and white photography.

Had I been able to express myself adequately in words I would probably not need to paint so please forgive my rambling introspection, Like many others I live a life of quiet desperation and my studio is the refuge where I use painting to unravel life's confusion and hopefully figure out why some experiences distress, intrigue or amuse me. I appreciate and enjoy many aspects of society and the natural world but it is people that really fascinate and perplex me. All my imagery therefore relates to experiences either of people I know or to humanity more generally. Naturally it is always pleasing to know that other people find my artwork of interest but it isn’t why I do it - I simply paint to understand, not to be understood. I am past caring how what I do relates to contemporary art. The commodification of which, sadly, seems to have taken an incestuous, elitist tangent that has little to do with our eternal desire for knowledge. Painting and drawing is for me the most infuriatingly difficult, absorbing and enjoyable activity and I feel very fortunate to be an artist. If you wish to see more of my artwork please visit my website. I am also an infrequent blogger but if you would really want to find out more about me please check out my blog . Thank you for your interest.
