About The Artwork

The dilapidated hotel Bageion (constructed in 1890-1894) designed by architect Ernst Ziller, after a donation of Ioannis Bagas, is located in the infamous Omonia square in Athens, Greece. It was reopened to host certain seminars and exhibits In 2015, as part of the Athens Biennale 2015-2017: “OMONOIA”. I spent many weeks every summer at the Bageion as a child and my understanding of a city that never sleeps and the underworld were shaped in this building. I consider myself the Balkan Eloise. The delicious smell of fresh ink on newsprint, grilled meat, sweet pastries and french perfume and night blooming jasmine, combined with constant exhaust fumes, pungent body odors and urine is the smell of 3 A.M., right? The sex workers clicking stiletto heels strutting next to the German tourists asking for directions next to the local night owls bellowing their political beliefs is its soundtrack.
