I’m told my French ancestors arrived from Normandy in 1660 to what was then known as New France (later New England). I always tended to have an affinity with everything American. Also, some of these French hillbillies ended up in Louisiana (courtesy of the British), which means I've got ancestors who fought for each side in the American Civil War. In 1990 I was passing through Murfreesboro, Tennessee and by chance visited an old Civil War battlefield; attached to it is a Union Army cemetery with approximately 7,000 graves. Remarking that it would be cool/weird if one of my ancestors was buried there, I looked over at a headstone at random to find it was that of a Yankee soldier from the exact same part of the state as my grandparents were from – and he bore my grandfather's surname! Thomas Guy was a private who died during the battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River), I believe on December 31, 1862. He was 27 years old. It was a surprisingly modern war, with railroads, trenches, machineguns, submarines, air ships, and mass industrial production methods used to pound the rebels into submission. Best of all, photography was used extensively for the first time, showing us today how the world really looked in the 1860s. © James Walker 2013
