For this series of paintings, it started when I came across at work a box of chads (i.e., the fragments sometimes created when holes are made in a paper or what I call "spots") next to the hole-punch machine, instead of the garbage or the recycle bin. I'm glad that they were not thrown away so thought that instead of wasting them, I could use them to create art. Hence, the "Spots" series were born. Using a cradled panel boards as my canvas, I sprinkled the board with those chads and using a matte medium as the glue. For the other pieces of this series (Black & White, Rainbow, Space), I used acrylic paints to paint the chads. Realizing that as a person I produce a lot of waste, I thought that creating this art is a start on using found objects as part of my artwork and do my own way of recycling.

Ronan Tipan is a Filipino-American painter from Chicago, Illinois. His passion for art started at an early age, but a moral obligation to assist his family financially caused him to put his passion aside. As a kid, he was taught to study hard and get a job, and that art was not a viable way to earn a living. While this path led him to a successful career in business, he began to wonder if he should be doing something differently. To commemorate a sentimental moment in his life, he decided to create a painting, and in that process, his passion for art was reignited. MEDIUMS / PROCESS / INSPIRATION While oil is his preferred medium, he utilizes other mediums such as charcoal, conte crayons, acrylic paints, and materials such as paper, linen, and everyday objects. As part of his process, Ronan creates art based on items he finds interesting, observations in his environment, or ideas that come to mind; then focusing on a specific angle, a moment, or an emotion. Other times his process is more fluid, simply getting lost in the process and letting his mind or feelings dictate where the brush takes him.
