Smoke and Mirrors Collage

The most amazing thing about the British people is that everyone appears to be playing a part in some kind of gigantic ongoing play. North Americans can spend their entire lives believing that whatever they do in life REALLY matters, while the Brits seem lazy and preoccupied, only willing to do anything when forced to.  Everyone (Brits) thinks they're special.  It's really possible to have intelligent conversations with almost anyone in Britain. The collective intelligence of the place is amazing.  Brits hate being bossed around. They prefer to be left to their own devices and when challenged will usually fight, or collectively riot. Stereotypes notwithstanding, they can't be pigeonholed like other cultures. Why this is true, I've never been able to figure out, despite trying.  Britain is also wet, surprisingly cold given the relatively decent temperatures (must be the humidity) and a perfect model of overpopulation. These factors tend to drive Brits out into the wider world, causing them to emigrate almost as a matter of course.  But, once away from the place they've run off from, no matter where they go, all of a sudden they forget about the misery they've left and begin to wax nostalgic for Blighty. Their open-mindedness is astonishing. They're happy to let anyone come here, provided they can add value to the place. You will never be one of them, ever, but nevertheless they are generally tolerant, and happy to make room for you.  © James Walker 2013
