'Sandpaper Town' Collage

The final house in the series of 30 created one per day of April 2020 completes the town comprising thirty properties made from different sandpapers. Each property creates a powerful context for its inhabitants and has a formative effect on them, their relations, and friends. A few years ago, I saw pieces of sandpaper lying on the floor of Jane Price’s studio @janepriceart. She had used them in making her ‘map’ paintings. Jane agreed to keep these distressed sandpapers instead of throwing them away and over the years I received several bundles bag-fulls which sat in my studio awaiting an idea... In 2015 it struck me that the use of sandpaper in the building of houses could be a metaphor for what happens to their occupants later. Human interrelationships are a process of attrition, and the place where these interactions occur has a strong influence. Only later, having created many sandpaper collages, did I discover the statement by Winston Churchill in the House of Commons on October 28, 1944: “We shape our buildings, and afterwards, our buildings shape us.”
