Sandpaper is a humble material yet it is instrumental in the building of houses. In use it acquires the colours of the surfaces and materials sanded. The abrasion process takes grit off the sandpaper and handling it causes creases and tears. These houses made out of sandpaper are a metaphor for how dwelling places affect their inhabitants, and vice-versa. The generations of people living in them change these houses, and these houses change them too. I'm indebted to artist Jane Price for giving me her old sandpapers, which she used to create her own multi-layered paintings, and are thus also carrying memories of her cityscapes.
