About The Artwork

This Mask is part of a Live Art Performance 'Rejuvenation' by Tom Estes. On the 19th of September, 2008 Tom Estes premiered the 'Rejuvenation Mask' at The RVCC exhibition 'Lust & Luxuria' as part of The Whitechapel Gallery, Late Nghts. 'Rejuvenation Mask' is a 'found object' originally marketed under the aegis of 'Health and Beauty'. While the face of the mask exhibits a kind of hieratic calm, on the back are tiny metal nodules that send electric currents into the face of the wearer. Estes has further highlighted the sado-masochistic element of the object by displaying it in a slightly downward cast. However, the mask is also displayed under a glass dome and on a light box and plinth. A commentary on the hidden and concealed nature of master narratives, the main conceit of the work is that release from physical chains only results in the replacement of mental ones. Through this kind of irreverent tweaking of the politics of display, Estes creates slight shifts in perception, thereby suggesting that fantasy and illusion are not contradictions of reality, but instead and integral part of our everyday lives

As an artist I employ various social web platforms as an artistic tool. Through my work I focus on the liberatory potenital for the internet to serve as a performative archive and an alternative exhibition space. My innovative web adventures and conversations are situated within current debates around the ubiquity of new technologies and of the shared delusions of human experience. The primary source of my recorded images are generated from a kind of public intervention, captured haphazardly on clandestine cameras that are smuggled into instiutional spaces. The action which takes place between moments in the guarding of cultural artifacts and is recorded and then distriburted using existing networks including social networking sites. My work has been hung, played and performed in a few of the world's right places and a couple of deliciously wrong ones. While the mainstay of my practice has been my more ephemeral installations, and embryonic Live Art performance outside the walls of the gallery, I have also had work included in some of the more cutting edge and experimental events & projects found in public institutions such as Tate Modern, The Wellcome Collection, The Whitechapel Gallery, the De La Warr Pavilion and Beaconsfield. I was born in the U.S.A, and lived in Paris for a couple of years before settling in London as my base of operations. I have a B.A (Hons) in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins and an Undergraduate Certificate in Local History from Oxford University. I also have a professional qualification in Video Production from City & Guilds. I have been a regular contributor to artist collectives The Red Velvet Curtain Cult and ArtEVict and I am currently a memeber of Alt MFA.
